Long Island Lighthouse Challenge – Day Tripper
The fifth annual Long Island Lighthouse Challenge is scheduled for Saturday & Sunday, May 16-17.
Organized by The Long Island Lighthouse Society, entrants in the event are encouraged to visit 11 historic sites throughout Suffolk County during the same weekend. The featured lighthouses are at Fire Island, Huntington Harbor, Eaton’s Neck, Old Field Point, Horton’s Point, Orient Point, Plum Island, Long Beach Bar, Cedar Island and Montauk Point, plus the East End Seaport Museum in Greenport. Challenge participators will receive a souvenir at each site, plus a commemorative keepsake will be awarded to those who visit all 11 notable maritime locations.
The Long Island Lighthouse Challenge is a cooperative effort by Suffolk County’s educational and lighthouse preservation societies to educate the public on eastern Long Island’s rich maritime history. To help defray costs, commemorative merchandise is sold, a raffle is held, and late afternoon cruises to the lighthouses at Long Beach Bar, Cedar Island, Plum Island, and Orient Point will depart Greenport on May 15 & 16. A local historian will discuss the highlights and legacy of each site and refreshments will be served. Those on the cruise will get a jumpstart on the weekend’s Challenge, as souvenirs and passport stamps will be provided for each location.
