Crazy Beans

A boating trip to Stony Brook may include shopping, historical sights, fine dining, and walking the labyrinth at Avalon Park. All that activity works up the kind of appetite that may only be satisfied by a stack of pancakes and a frothy sweet drink, or a hearty sandwich and an aromatic cup of tea or coffee. Luckily, boaters can find that and more at Crazy Beans, a short walk from the Stony Brook Yacht Club and many of Stony Brook’s harbor attractions.

This bright, lively spot would fit into the 1950s as comfortably as today. It’s a luncheonette, a soda shoppe, and a Central Perk that appeals to all ages. As we wait for a table, the overflowing plates that pass us by elicit a lot of “I want that… and that… and that!”

Crazy Beans pancakeWhat’s on those plates? Breakfast and lunch offerings served simultaneously until 4:00 pm daily. That means your table can end up enjoying chocolate chip pancakes, a farmer’s omelet, a burrito (with eggs, cheddar, and a “secret” sauce), granola, and a veggie quesadilla. Lattes on the menu range from A (apple) to W (white chocolate), and specials the day we visited included rainbow cookie, popcorn, and blueberry muffin lattes — all served hot, iced, or blended.

In our comfy booth, the ability to design an omelet appealed to my dining companion. Cheddar and onions were abundant in the fluffy omelet, and the accompanying chunky home fries were pleasingly crisped. I asked the accommodating wait staff at the door and again at the table if there was a vegan offering. Though there was not, I was assured that the hummus wrap, veggie wrap, and veggie quesadilla could be prepared without cheese. I can report that the cheese-free wrap brimming with spinach, tomatoes, onions, and hummus was quite tasty! Other wraps include chicken Caesar and turkey with pepper jack cheese.

There are soups and salads, including the Crazy Beans and candied nuts salads and a kid’s menu with breakfast and lunch items. However, it’s not fair to this eatery for me to categorize menu items into the time of day people might eat them. Who’s to say whether an egg white baguette, cookies and cream pancakes, or a BLT with avocado goes better with a peanut butter latte?
