Chowder Bar

Just like boaters and boats, eateries come in all sizes and slants to attract diners and entice them to return time after time — large and fancy, small and casual, impersonal and corporate, or cozy and inviting.

When seeking a tasty meal served by friendly staff in engaging surroundings, the Chowder Bar near the Maple Avenue Marina will float your boat. In operation since 1975 (the present owners have been ladling out chowder since 1988), the restaurant has a large bar and comfortable seating area. If you want a blast of color and burst of briny sea creatures, ask for a table in the adjacent dining room. We were all smiles from the moment we spied the salty painted scene splashed across the wall.

The smiles won’t fade when the food arrives, though there may be a dilemma when choosing which chowder to order — there are four (Manhattan, New England, Long Island, and seafood) on the menu, two on the specials board, and a couple of beguiling bisques. My dining companion chose the chunky but silky corn chowder special and declared it delectable.

food at Chowder BarAppetizers include raw clams, oysters, steamed mussels, coconut shrimp, and fried calamari. The crab cakes were a hit at the next table (they said they battled over one plate before, so this time they ordered a double portion). Scallops, shrimp, clams, flounder, crabs, and catfish are fried and served as entrées in non-seaworthy boats with fries and coleslaw. Other entrées from the deep include blackened Cajun catfish, shrimp Parmigiana, and linguine with red or white clam sauce.

Burgers, wraps, and sandwiches surface from the sea, but the land is well represented. Order a grilled cheese, turkey club, BLT, cheeseburger, or Buffalo chicken, and get a side of regular or Cajun fries, or the onion rings.

Vegetarians have choices including a vegetarian wrap (easily made vegan by omitting the cheese), a black bean burger, and salad. Gluten-free diners have choices including salads and broiled flounder.

Desserts, all made on the premises, vary. At our visit, there was cold and deep fried ice cream, a warm brownie sundae, an apple crisp, and peanut butter and blueberry crumb pie.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day and closed in February.
