Custer Institute and Observatory

December 31, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

The evening sky puts on a wonderful show, especially as you head east on Long Island to scenic Southold.

The Custer Institute and Observatory, located at 1115 Main Bayview Road in Southold, was established in 1927, making it Long Island’s oldest public observatory. It is open to the public every Saturday 7:00 pm through midnight (when weather permits). Institute volunteers provide tours of the facility and allow visitors to view the solar system and deep space objects through powerful equipment.

Custer has a library, museum, and gift shop. Along with Saturday evening viewings, there are special events including lectures, classes, concerts, and art exhibits.
