Drift 82

On a Saturday evening in late summer, Drift 82 was buzzing. The sun was sliding down the Patchogue River by the restaurant’s docking, a guitarist was crooning by the outside bar as line dancers tossed their limbs, the doors and windows for inside diners let in the breezes, and culinary creations sprang forth from the kitchen.

The restaurant is stylishly casual. The sleek bar has a sign that says, “It’s a Long Island thing” and you nod in understanding. Nautical art adorns the walls in case the bustling boat activity isn’t enough to make you feel serene by the shore.

We met up with friends who raved about the eatery. They knew they wanted to start their meal with tasty shrimp and lobster wontons served with hoisin sauce, proclaiming them “crispy but not at all greasy.” Other appealing seafood appetizers include jumbo lump crab cake, clams casino, Cajun seared tuna, seafood chowder, lobster bisque, and raw bar selections. Non-seafood starters include spinach artichoke dip, marinated steak tidbits, and salads including Caprese and Caesar.

Entrées come from the land and sea. Two of my dining companions chose briny offerings; they savored mahi mahi topped by grilled pineapple chutney and seared tuna steak over bok choy and under seaweed. Another ordered an herb and citrus marinated half chicken that was roasted and served atop garlic mashed potatoes.

Drift 82 offers a seafood tower for two bursting with clams, oysters, shrimp, lobster, and mussels that many at nearby tables were enjoying. Other entrées include lobster in ravioli or combined with mac and cheese, steaks, seafood fra diavolo, salmon, Dover sole, scallops, penne with grilled chicken, fettuccine with shrimp, scallops, shallots, and shiitake mushrooms in a brandy cream sauce, and porterhouse pork chop.

Gluten-free diners have multiple choices, while vegetarians can select salad and pasta (made with eggs) minus the chicken or seafood. There’s not much for vegans — the kitchen heaped sautéed spinach and steamed asparagus and broccoli onto a plate for me.

Desserts include New York cheesecake, tiramisu, a chocolate bundt cake accompanied by vanilla ice cream, peach or coconut sorbet, and cookies and cream or chocolate gelato. Pardon the pun, but any dessert is icing on the cake of a visit to Drift 82.
