Tiger Lily Café

When you find yourself in Port Jefferson and in the mood for casual food (but definitely not fast food), stroll over to Tiger Lily Café. It’s a leisurely walk from Danfords, the Port Jefferson Yacht Club, and the town marina.

Tiger Lily’s offers vegetarian, vegan, and omnivarian fare, along with java and juice, in a relaxing and interesting space that always features striking art and sometimes features local music. There are comfy couches, small tables, and a deck that allow you to linger as you savor your food.

Tiger Lily bEvery time I visit, the display case is offering specials of appetizing and tempting foods and soups. I have my favorites from the regular menu, including the falafel with “the works” (tomato, cucumber, lettuce, and sprouts, with tahini), balsamic roasted vegetable wrap with delicious hummus, sesame tofu cutlet wrap with an equally delicious Asian peanut sauce, and my go-to lunchtime pick: chunky peanut butter and banana in a whole wheat wrap.

My dining partner enjoys the roasted chicken wrap and the smoked turkey wrap. Other enticements include the Caesar, Greek, or Newport blues salads (the latter has pears, pecans, and bleu cheese, and can also be ordered in a wrap). There’s a veggie burger served with cheese or salsa, a crab cake sandwich, and a country wrap with honey maple ham and apples. Tiger Lily encourages late risers to order a bagel or bacon with melted Havarti and tomatoes anytime (the café doesn’t open until 11:00 am, so those early risers aren’t waiting, anyway).

Along with any meal, I like a Bermuda Triangle (bananas, strawberries, and orange juice). You may like a fruit juice cocktail (beets, red apples, and ginger make a tasty Red Devil), or if you’re not in the mood for a tasty brownie or cookie, indulge in an energy shake, smoothie, frappé, or something delectable from the cappuccino bar.

The Café is also close to Harborfront Park, where something always seems to be happening — and where picnicking is as natural as the food served at Tiger Lily. Just be sure to pick up your tasty fare before the eatery closes at 6:00 pm.
