Easy Maintenance

What’s in your toolbox? We know there’s not a lot of space in the average vessel, but the last thing you want is to cut your day short because an essential tool isn’t aboard. For the best shot at a satisfactory fix, stow these tools, parts, and accessories in a waterproof box or compartment:

  • Adjustable wrenches
  • Cable ties
  • Caulk
  • Cutters
  • Electrical tape
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Fuses
  • Hoses and clamps
  • Pliers
  • Ratchets
  • Rechargeable drill and drill bits
  • Running light bulbs
  • Safety glasses
  • Scissors
  • Screwdrivers
  • Screws, snaps, bolts, and nuts
  • Sockets
  • Spare belts if you have an inboard
  • Spark plugs and wires
  • Universal drain plug
  • Wire

[Publishers note: I like to have extras because I invariably drop something overboard. I also have a baby diaper aboard to plug up or slow down a leak.]

Since it’s hard to anticipate every eventuality, you may need to call for a tow. Whether you’re towed in or DIY, have a skilled mechanic look at your on-the-fly handiwork before you make another boat trip.
