Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

There are so many times I love to take my boat out alone. However, even if you know how to swim, you must follow some important rules when going solo.

  1. Wear a life jacket — don’t take anything for granted.
  2. File a float plan — inform someone about your trip. Also, carry some form of ID so that someone can be notified in case of an emergency.
  3. Never drink alcohol — it can severely impair your judgment and result in accidents.
  4. Dress according to the weather conditions and water temperature — wear a hat and apply sun block.
  5. Hydrate — carry lots of drinking water (and food) to keep alert.
  6. Tread carefully — watch out for slippery decks.
  7. Be prepared — have a first aid kit and a flare gun.
  8. Think — don’t take chances, especially in unknown waters.

Sincerely,

Lt Marty Seconhouse AP,IN

Jones Beach Power Squadron
